Military History Center

Welcome to the Military History Center (MHC) at the University of North Texas, home of one of the world’s premier military history programs. We offer a rich course rotation for both graduate and undergraduate students on the great conflicts of history, as well as war and society, military thought, and diplomacy. Here at UNT, students have the opportunity to learn from military historians at the forefront of their fields and to meet and interact with the world-class scholars, diplomats, journalists, veterans and active-duty military leaders whom we invite to campus for our speaker programs. In the fall, we host the Alfred Hurley Military History Seminar, which has been an annual event in North Texas for over forty years. Recent speakers have included Dr. Jeremy Black, Dr. Andrew Wiest, Colonel Ramon "Tony" Nadal (US Army, ret.), General Peter B. Zwack (US Army, ret.), and Dr. Rana Mitter. In the spring, we host the War Studies Symposium, in which we examine a major issue in war studies through the eyes of a prominent historian. We also hold “one-off” events to address specific topics of interest, such as the historical background of contemporary conflicts.

Our academic programs include a B.A. in History with a focus on military history, along with highly respected M.A. and Ph.D. programs in military history. Here at the MHC, we study, analyze and discuss the history and future of military organizations, military thought, war, and the experience of war from multiple global and local perspectives.
